About Animal Matters
Animal Matters redefines what it means to be a climate hero.
At a time when the polycrisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution dominates the headlines, sustainability journalist and lifelong environmentalist Gia Mora tells a different climate story — one where optimism fuels action and where every small step creates cascades of change.
In her newsletter Animal Matters, Gia explores how living well on a warming planet isn’t about sacrifice; it’s about abundance — of connection, creativity, and compassion. Through uplifting stories and practical guidance, she empowers readers to become ‘joyful heroes’ in the face of the climate crisis, proving that a more equitable and sustainable future is not only possible — it’s already taking shape.
Why read Animal Matters?
Because, as writer and political activist Muriel Rukeyer remarked, the universe is made of stories, and as long as there are stories, there is hope.

It offers realistic and actionable advice
Gia meets everyone where they’re at and offers practical guidance for expanding personal sustainability practices. (She’s even been called “the nicest vegan I’ve ever met” by a meat executive!)
It’s conversational and inclusive
No perfectionism, no gatekeeping — just a welcoming space to explore intersectionality and ways everyone can become a part of the solution.
It can help you write a new story
By replacing fear with possibility, Gia demonstrates that climate-conscious living is an accessible and empowering adventure.

Meet Gia Mora, Creator of Animal Matters
Animal Matters was created by multidisciplinary climate storyteller Gia Mora (she/her/hers) to share her passion for sustainability.
Gia's essays and journalism have been featured in The Los Angeles Times, Huffington Post, Treehugger, Modern Farmer, Business Insider, and more. Her original music video “Take Some Action (to Get Some Action)” and her short film “Me and Ma’ii” (quarter-finalist, 2023 Golden Scripts Competition) use humor and narrative to inspire climate action.
In 2024, Gia was named an Innovator in Cohort 5 of the Climatebase Fellowship for her climate action reality TV pitch. She is a current fellow with Step Zero and serves on the Climate Tech Advisory Board for Dashboard.Earth. An almost-certified Electric Coach with Rewiring America, Gia is a decarbonization ambassador with Generation180 and The Switch is On. She’s also a Public Health Ambassador with Los Angeles County, advocating for the One Health approach to sustainability — an integrated strategy that recognizes the health of people, animals, and ecosystems are all intertwined.
She lives a low-impact life along the Paayme Paxaayt (L.A. River) with her two adopted kitties, Wamba and Giacomo. Connect with her on Bluesky or LinkedIn.
